You can call it experience, learning lessons, things I’ll never do again, but we all make mistakes. Of course, it’s less painful to learn from other people’s mishaps than our own. In our roundtable discussion, we shared participatory and spectator examples.

Mary Hemlepp, APR (accredited in public relations), is a principal at Wiser, Hemlepp & Associates. “We consider ourselves a PR, marketing and opinion research firm, not an ad agency,” she said.

It’s interesting that advertising, marketing, publicity, public relations and similar terms have so many definitions, depending on whom you ask or what you read. Mary asked some of her PR contemporaries for their definitions of “public relations.” One of them, Lisa Smith, communications manager at Columbia Gas of Kentucky, said, “Public relations is the practice of managing the flow of information between an organization and its publics.”
